Nha Trang railway station

Ga Nha Trang

Nha Trang railway station (Ga Nha Trang) stands at 17 Thái Nguyên street in Nha Trang ward, Khanh Hoa province, on the North-South railway at kilometre post 1314+930[1]. It was inaugurated on 2 September 1936[1][2], is operated by Vietnam Railways[2], and has two platforms and five tracks[1][2]. Its position is about 12.2483 N, 109.1842 E[5].

Rail reached the area in 1913, when the line from Saigon terminated at Phú Vinh station some 5 km outside the then centre of Nha Trang; the present station was built closer to the centre as the North-South line was completed on 2 September 1936, and Phú Vinh was left as a freight-only stop until it was abolished in 2018[2]. The station building is concrete in the French colonial manner, and it is listed as a historical relic[1].

Draft national railway plans have proposed since 2021 that the station keep its passenger role while its freight work moves to a new station at Vĩnh Trung, and that after high-speed rail is built the station be moved out of the centre altogether and the building turned into a museum[3].

The 1936 station

The railway from Saigon reached the Nha Trang area in 1913, and its terminus was Phú Vinh station, about 5 km from what was then the centre of the town[2]. When the North-South line was completed on 2 September 1936 a new station was built nearer the centre, and Phú Vinh was reduced to freight work; English Wikipedia says it was abolished in 2018 after about 86 years[2]. That span reconciles with neither date the same source gives: 1913 to 2018 is 105 years and 1936 to 2018 is 82, and 86 years would put the station’s opening in 1932, for which no source was found[2].

The station is laid out as a terminus-style loop inside the city block, with two platforms and five tracks[1][2]. It faced a large garden, which later became Võ Văn Ký park and is now 23 October park, and it was flanked by two matching buildings[1][2]. The 1936 structure survives with its French-era architecture[1][2].

October 1945

The station was the scene of fighting at dawn on 23 October 1945, when the people of Khanh Hoa opened fire on French forces there[1]. Võ Văn Ký, who commanded the action, was killed at the station, and the park in front was named after him before it was renamed 23 October park after the date of the battle[1]. The station is recorded as a historical relic on that account[1].

Position on the line

The station sits at kilometre post 1314+930 measured from Hanoi, and Vietnamese Wikipedia lists its distances to the other main stops on the North-South line[1]. Besides the Thống Nhất through services, the station is used by the Saigon to Nha Trang trains (SNT) and by Saigon to Quy Nhon services (SQN)[1].

Relocation proposals

The draft national railway network plan for 2021 to 2030 with a vision to 2050, circulated in September 2021, argued that the North-South line through the centre of Nha Trang disrupts urban traffic and causes pollution[3]. For Nha Trang the draft proposed keeping the passenger function at the existing station and building a new freight station at Vĩnh Trung to replace the freight role of the present one[3]. The consultants also proposed rebuilding a locomotive turning facility during 2021 to 2030 so that the loop line on the station site could be removed, and, after 2050, moving the whole station, realigning the main line so that it no longer enters Nha Trang, and converting the station building into a museum[3].

Two options for the move have circulated in the press: keep passenger services at the existing station and put freight in the suburbs, or move the entire station to a new site[1][2]. Vietnamese Wikipedia names the receiving unit as Tây Nha Trang ward[1], while the English article and the 2021 draft name Vĩnh Trung[2][3].

In April 2025 the Ministry of Construction put a plan for a number of national, urban, hub and international-connection railway stations out to consultation[4]. Nha Trang is one of twelve stations named on the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City line, alongside a separate Vĩnh Trung station, and the consultants grouped Vinh, Dieu Tri, Nha Trang and Thap Cham as stations tied to between 500,000 and 1 million tourist passengers a year that need rebuilding and enlarging[4].
