Doc Let
Dốc Lết
Doc Let (Dốc Lết) is a beach in Dong Ninh Hoa ward, Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam[1][2]. Vietnamese Wikipedia places it 46.3 km from Nha Trang along National Route 1 to the north[1], while Thanh Nien gives the distance as about 50 km[2]. Thanh Nien describes the sand as running for about 18 km[2].
The beach lies on the Hon Khoi peninsula on the east side of the former Ninh Hoa district, which Vietnamese Wikipedia records as holding one of the largest salt fields in central Vietnam[3]. Van Phong Bay, fishing villages and the hills of Hon Khoi and Hon Heo lie around it[1].
The name is explained locally by the steep, slippery slopes that people once had to crawl over to reach the water, lết being the Vietnamese verb for crawling[1][2].
Location
Doc Let is in Dong Ninh Hoa ward in the north of Khanh Hoa province[1][2]. Vietnamese Wikipedia puts it 46.3 km from Nha Trang along National Route 1 heading north[1]; Thanh Nien, writing in July 2026, gives the distance as about 50 km to the north[2].
OpenStreetMap maps the beach as a coastal feature centred on 12.5594°N, 109.2316°E, in the same ward[4]. Van Phong Bay lies to the north, and fishing villages, salt fields and the hills of Hon Khoi and Hon Heo surround the beach[1].
Wikidata lists the beach under the variant spelling Dốc Lếch, with the Vietnamese Wikipedia article as its only linked page and Vietnam as its country[5].
The name
Dốc means a slope and lết means to crawl. Local accounts recorded by Vietnamese Wikipedia explain the name by the steep, slippery slopes that people once had to crawl across to reach the shore[1]. Thanh Nien gives the same account and attributes the slopes to the high sand dunes behind the beach[2].
Both sources present the explanation as a local account rather than a documented origin[1][2]. Neither gives a date for the first recorded use of the name, and no fetched page named an earlier one for the beach.
Hon Khoi and the salt fields
Hon Khoi (Hòn Khói), recorded also under the Sino-Vietnamese name Yen Cang, is a peninsula on the east side of the former Ninh Hoa district[3]. Vietnamese Wikipedia places it more than 10 km by road from Ninh Hoa and more than 40 km north of Nha Trang, and lists four units on it, Ninh Hai, Ninh Diem, Ninh Thuy and Ninh Phuoc, calling all four communes[3]. Resolution 1667/NQ-UBTVQH15, which merged them into Dong Ninh Hoa ward on 1 July 2025, lists Ninh Diem, Ninh Hai and Ninh Thuy as wards and only Ninh Phuoc as a commune[6].
The salt fields of Hon Khoi are among the largest in central Vietnam[3]. No published figure for their area or their annual output was found on any page fetched for this article.
Recognition and facilities
In July 2026 Thanh Nien reported that Lonely Planet had placed Doc Let in a list of 10 of the best beaches in Vietnam, and that Khanh Hoa was the only province with two beaches on that list, the other being Nha Trang Beach[2].
Vietnamese Wikipedia describes a resort area at the beach with swimming pools, kiosks, hotels and restaurants, and a seafood market[1].
